The
Cerebral Palsy Association (Eastern Cape) was established
in Port Elizabeth, in 1955. The primary mission of the Association
is to encourage, assist and care for all persons affected
by cerebral palsy, and assist them to attain their maximum
potential and independently integrate into the community.
The Association is a registered Non-Profit Organisation, and
is affiliated to the National Association for Persons with
Cerebral Palsy in South Africa.
The Association presently operates from its own premises in
Port Elizabeth. It has a small permanent staff, ably assisted
by a network of volunteers. The Association is directed by
an Executive Management Committee of 12 members, who are elected
bi-annually and serve on a voluntary basis.
Over the past half-century the Association has had some notable
successes, having been instrumental in:

Establishing
and developing the Cape Recife School for children with
Cerebral Palsy and Learning Disabilities;

Establishing
the Northern Lights School for children with Cerebral
Palsy;
|
| |
|
| ·
|
Establishing
the Lonwabo School for children with Cerebral Palsy;
|
| |
|
| ·
|
Raising
funds from corporate donors to support specific projects
at these schools;
|
| |
|
| ·
|
Raising
funds from the public and corporate donors to support
specific requirements of individuals with Cerebral Palsy,
such as wheelchairs;
|
| |
|
| ·
|
Raising
funds for the establishment of the PE Hyperbaric Unit,
which applies hyperbaric oxygen therapy to individuals
with cerebral palsy and other medical conditions, as
well as providing emergency hyperbaric services to divers;
|
| |
|
| ·
|
Establishing
the Summerstrand Independent Living Center (SILC) -
the first Independent Living Center in South Africa,
where individuals with Cerebral Palsy will be enabled
to achieve independence in their lives. SILC is presently
under final development and construction, and is expected
to be completed by end 2005.

Current
projects which are being undertaken by the Association or
are in various stages of planning include:

Cape
Recife School - Continued sponsorship and support
of the school in it's development.

KnowCP
Information and Resource Center - Establishment
of an information and resource center to collect and
distribute information and knowledge on cerebral palsy,
treatments, facilities and specialists to all individuals
and families affected by cerebral palsy.

|
Job
creation - A facilitation service to coordinate
the placement of suitably-qualified individuals in suitable
positions in commerce and industry.
|

| ·
|
Training
- Facilitate and coordinate the further training of
individuals with CP through external training, to better
match the employment opportunities and requirements.
|

|
| ·
|
Therapies
- Provision of supporting therapies to individuals
with CP by coordinating specialist therapists, and providing
facilities and equipment. Include adults and children.
Include occupational therapy, physiotherapy, hyperbaric
oxygen therapy, psychological counselling, group rehabilitation,
and socialization.

Mentorship
- Establish and coordinate a mentorship programme
to place individuals in industry to shadow mentors for
a fixed period, to familiarize the individuals with
the career path / job requirements.

Accommodation
- Establish permanent accommodation which can be owned
or leased by persons affected by CP (SILC). Establish
temporary accommodation for individuals and groups affected
by CP (SILC). Establish a network of all disabled-friendly
holiday accommodation facilities, with a database of
the disabled-enabling facilities each facility has.

Assistance
Programmes - A range of assistance programs and
support groups using a network of volunteers or corporate
service providers.

Technology
Programme - A program to identify new requirements
for assistive technologies. Establish a network of technology
developers who can develop the new technologies.

Social
Activities - A program of social activities catering
for persons with CP.

|
| ·
|
Employment
through Service Provision - Establish a range of
services which can be provided to external customers
by the CP Association through an in-house program
|

| ·

Services
- A range of support services which can be supplied
to individuals with CP.
|
