Hambisela Pro:  Basic Principles of Assessment and Treatment of Cerebral Palsy

14 CPD Points

This is an introductory course for physiotherapists, speech therapists and occupational therapists working with children affected by CP (especially in under-resourced hospitals).  This course will also be beneficial for therapy students as preparation for their community service year, and as a refresher for more experienced therapists.

It could also serve as a precursor to more practical handling courses presented by SANDTA and Malamulele Onwards.

This course will provide participants with knowledge on cerebral palsy and where to start treatment especially for those working in low resource settings, having to manage large case loads.  As well as how to involve parents / primary caregivers in a functional approach that will empower them to help their children reach their potential.

Topics covered in the course:

  • What is Hambisela

  • Classification, assessment and treatment of cerebral palsy

  • Positioning and equipment for function

  • Positioning products

  • Therapeutic feeding

  • Communication and AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication)

  • Practical everyday activities

  • Teaching strategies and adaptations in the classroom

  • Play and toys

  • Facilitating a Hambisela Parent group
